Inuyasha (S3E6): The 50 Year-Old Curse of the Dark Priestess

Inuyasha tears through a paper silhouette

Tsubaki, a dark priestess once defeated by Kikyo, returns to hassle Inuyasha and company. A curse on Kagome ought to do the trick.

Original Air Date: 11 Feb 2002, Streamed on: Hulu

Kagura shows up to recruit Tsubaki for Naraku, whose violent trolling of Inuyasha knows no bounds. She name drops Kikyo, instantly convincing her, so they ride together on Kagura’s giant feather to meet with Naraku. He promises Tsubaki eternal youth, and she’s ready to go.

As soon as she arrives back in feudal Japan, Kagome is bitten by a ghost-like demon serpent, a familiar of the dark priestess. Tsubaki uses Kagome’s blood to darken the Shikon jewel with a curse that also turns Kagome’s jewel shards black. The curse takes over Kagome, so Miroku and Sango take off on Kilala to find the dark priestess and stop the curse.

50 years before, Tsubaki tried to use a similar curse against Kikyo, but Kikyo reflected the curse back on her. LOL, you tried.

Kikyo reflects Tsubaki's curse
I’m rubber, and you’re glue…

Kagome fires enchanted arrows at Inuyasha, with Tsubaki urging her to kill him, but she fights for control and warns Inuyasha to run. Kilala crashes into Naraku’s protective barrier, but Kikyo draws near.

Episode Score Card:

  • Iron Reaver Soul Stealers: 1, extremely effective against a paper silhouette.
  • Wind Scars: 0
  • Backlash Waves: 0
  • Wind Tunnels: 0
  • Swarms of Naraku’s Bees: We got Naraku but no bees.
  • Jewel Shards Recovered: 0, but the 3 they have turned black, which seems quite bad.

Did you miss it?

Kagome’s family remains supremely chill about her travels to and from feudal era Japan. She’s like 14 years old, so this is beyond insane.
